After looking at Darwell’s work I am certain I want to base my project around the theme of trapped. I also intend of fitting in the idea of insanity, as for me the two are basically the same and I feel that the subject will be interesting to experiment with.

I recently visited the ‘Dark Matter’ exhibition at the Whitworth art Gallery in Manchester, which tackles the ideas of darkness and shadow by using two totally different showcasing methods. One being a very modern and technological way of creating work the other being the opposite purely using light and shadow. As I was there I discovered a fascinating piece of work called ‘Peg Mirror,’ the piece was made up of mutable circular wooden panels which together created a larger circle. In the centre of the circle was a camera so when stood in front of the piece the panels would twist and rotate to work with the spot light shining upon it, casting shadows to mirror the form.
I found this piece mesmerizing and I stood in front of it for quite some time making different poses to see how the work would mirror my image, it was extremely captivating and interestingly beautiful.

Considering the nature of Darwell’s photographs I feel that he may have just been documentation the treatment of animals, however, now I am not to sure. The photograph of the man in a cage makes me think twice about the idea of human imprisonment, it could go both ways really.
Either way, in my opinion, his work represents the theme of the exhibition very well. Strangely Darwell’s work has left me with a feeling of insanity but most of all, a feeling of being trapped like there is no way out.
